Wolsey is one of the oldest textile companies in the UK, having its humble beginnings in Leicester in 1755, over two hundred and fifty years ago. Wolsey has come a long way since then, becoming in turn a public company, and more recently reverting to a private company again. While Wolsey innovations can be found throughout its history, the early and mid twentieth century was a key time in its development, with many new fabrics and styles of fashion. The decade between the two World Wars was an era of flamboyance and gaiety. Outdoor activities such as Golf, Tennis, and Swimming became extremely popular. Wolsey rode on the wave of these trends and promoted new product lines such as Golfwear and bathing suits. Wolsey was also able to advertise for the first time in colour by taking advantage of the new colour lithographs. Wolsey commisioned talented, well-known artists of the time such as Mabel Lucy Artwell to illustrate its numerous advertising campaigns. In fact Wolsey fashion can now be found in more than 2000 locations around the world, and is present in Europe, North America, Australasia and the Far East.
