Price-Wizard Shopping News:
The End of Dealings in the Shares of GUSYesterday, on Friday, 6th October,2006, one of British retails most famous names was consigned to history, with the end of dealings in the shares of GUS. A pioneer of home shopping and - for better or worse - shopping by credit, long before the advent of the Internet, yesterday's final chapter brings a close to the 106 year history of GUS. GUS shareholders will receive shares in two business, ARG (Argos and Homebase), and Experian.
The huge growth of GUS eventually saw the GUS name embracing 80 diverse retail businesses, including Kays and Marshall Ward (now operated by Littlewoods Shop Direct) and Trafford Warehouses (later to become Great Universal Stores), which were the foundations of the GUS mail order business.
Other well-known GUS brands, such as Burberrys, John Temple, Town Tailors, Harry Attwood, Jay's, Vogue Fashion Shops and Whitneys each variously served different segments of the growing UK apparel markets.
